Copilot Agent Build-a-Thons: The Use Cases with Buzz

Over the past several weeks, PS Hummingbird partnered with Microsoft to run a series of Copilot Build-a-thons designed to take agent building from “interesting” to in production. We hosted three open, Agent Building public sessions (two in Atlanta and one in Charlotte), plus a dedicated build-a-thon for a single financial services organization in the Midwest. Across every room—developers, HR, risk, operations, and business teams—we saw the same thing happen: once people get hands-on with Copilot Studio, ideas get real fast. This post is a wrap-up of what we built, what we learned, and a “best of” collection of the use cases that sparked the most momentum. 


Best of the Build-a-thons: the agent ideas teams kept coming back to 

1) AI Learning Buddy / Personalized AI Training Agent Teams asked for a 24/7 learning companion that creates a personalized AI learning plan—tailored by role, skill level, learning preferences, timeline, and desired outcomes. 


It wasn’t just “teach me Copilot”—it was where do I even start? People were overwhelmed by the volume of AI training options and frustrated by one-size-fits-all guidance that didn’t map to their day jobs. We heard it directly: “We were just like overwhelmed and where to even start,” and “We needed something that broke it down by role and level.” The strongest pattern that emerged was trust through structure: using a SharePoint-hosted Word document as the single source of truth, turning off general knowledge, and walking users through a short set of intake questions so the agent can recommend the right learning path for the right person—every time. 


2) HR Policy & Internal Knowledge Q&A Agent A high-trust HR agent that answers employee questions using only approved internal policy documents—and refuses to answer when the policy doesn’t explicitly cover it. 


For HR, the message was clear: accuracy beats cleverness. Teams wanted an agent that answers questions using only what’s explicitly in approved policy documents—and refuses to answer when the policy doesn’t say it. As one participant put it, “Use the knowledge that we have specifically mentioned,” and another emphasized, “We wanted to make it more accurate by removing general references.” To make that real, we focused on guardrails: disable general knowledge, require citation-only responses, and put admin approval in front of publishing so governance is built in—not bolted on. 


3) Home Inspection Image Analysis Agent An image-enabled agent that analyzes multiple home inspection photos, responds within defined inspection guidelines, and rejects out-of-scope questions. 


The home inspection photo scenario looked simple at first glance—until the group unpacked it. “This looks like a very simple use case, but it has its own big list of issues,” summed it up perfectly.


The team’s north star was keeping the agent tightly scoped: analyze multiple inspection photos, respond only within defined inspection guidelines, and shut down anything outside the lane with clear prompts like, “Please ask a question related to home inspection.” We reinforced that approach by restricting the agent to inspection-only knowledge, standardizing refusal language, and testing locally before sharing more broadly. 


4) PDF-to-Word Table Extraction Agent An automation-focused agent that extracts structured tables from PDFs and converts them into editable Word documents for downstream editing and reuse. 

On the automation side, PDF-to-Word table extraction quickly turned into a real-world lesson in end-to-end reliability. We ran into exactly the kinds of blockers teams face in production: “It was not able to reference it in the end-to-end flow,” “The syntax is a little bit challenging,” and at one point, “The Adobe Reader API wasn’t available.” The build-a-thon takeaway: success here depends less on the idea and more on the plumbing—standardizing environments, logging missing APIs early so they can be escalated, and simplifying component chaining so the whole flow stays traceable and debuggable. 


5) Industry Tagging / Competitive Intelligence Agent A research-and-structure agent that classifies customer/company lists by industry and produces consistent, structured summaries. 

The industry tagging / competitive intelligence agent was a perfect example of “works in a demo” versus “works at scale.” Early tests were promising—“It worked with a simple sheet like 8 or 10 names”—but as lists grew, teams saw data-quality and scale limits show up fast: “Most of them were not found,” and “The agent has its limits… after eight customers.” The path forward was practical: re-index data before scaling, standardize on corporate environments to reduce variance, and batch larger datasets so the agent can stay consistent without hitting tool and context limits. 


Rapid wins we saw teams ship in a single afternoon In addition to the “best of” use cases above, teams also built quick-hit agents that delivered immediate value: 


Two rapid wins showed up again and again because they solve real daily friction. First, teams built a mailbox monitoring agent that watches for emails from a specific sender, parses the content, and filters out the noise—like change notifications that span dozens of database tables—so the user only gets surfaced what matters, with a Teams nudge when action is truly required. Second, we saw strong traction with a vetted-answers agent that responds to repeat questions using a curated database of pre-approved language. The design choice that made it click was keeping it grounded in that internal source only (no general knowledge), so responses stay consistent, compliant, and easy to keep current as the content set evolves. 


Across Atlanta, Charlotte, and our Midwest financial services sprint, the pattern was consistent: the most successful agents were the ones with clear boundaries, trusted data sources, and a simple path from idea to working prototype. The questions we heard weren’t just “Can Copilot do this?”—they were “How do we make it accurate?”, “How do we keep it governed?”, and “How do we scale it?” That’s exactly what these Build-a-thons are built for: compress the learning curve, get hands-on quickly, and leave with real agents and real next steps.
